about

The best of Constant Swimmer’s sound comes from his buildups. The excellently crafted ‘Infinitely Interesting’ may be a bit pompous in title, but it assuredly presses in a state of constant tension and build. The lead piano-esque melody is exquisite and it drops away to be picked up moments later. The song moves through passages, and this gets us at the heart of the style.

You get a sense that Constant Swimmer is running true with the moniker- the songs exist in this constant state of flux, as if his ADD-addled mind gets bored of one pattern and wants to introduce a new one as if thinking the listener is bored as well. This could be alienating, but it could also be brilliant. The songs evolve and change form, and at no time does a melody overstay its welcome. Many electronic artists get confident in a single idea and run it to the ground, creating a track or EP that is as repetitive as, well, a Katy Perry song.

There is an assured sense of tension in each of the tracks on this wonderful EP. Some songs pull more from a world of thick bass-heavy hip-hop (a la ‘Imaginalias’) and others dive and swoon in an imaginatorium of vocalized textures and unrestrained beauty (Woh Nim Ha). The EP’s cover accentuates this overall dreamy aesthetic, and you feel as if Constant Swimmer is trying to tell you something about yourself- about the state of dreaming, about the possibilities of electronic music- about what makes a song pulse ebb and flow in all the right ways without ever falling into any one single direction. ‘Dream State’ is a radiant collection deserving of some non-obligated and forced attention.
